Teacher Page

Students are guided to research a variety of online texts with the aim of developing their knowledge of Wollongong in general and as a tourist destination in particular.

In the context of the travel text genre students will build on their existing knowledge of text types. They will identify the language features of travel guides and compose a text using these features.

Students develop critical thinking skills through analysing the information they research according to its relevance to a specific traveller type.

Students survey the websites with their traveller type in mind.  They then synthesise this information into a product that specifically targets their audience using  present simple verb tense, persuasive and descriptive language techniques, declarative and exclamative sentences and modality.

Students complete a range of activities individually and as a group.

While there is a lot of reading in this webquest students are able to practice all four language skills. Students are given ample opportunities for language input in the form of reading websites, listening to their peers in group discussions and viewing videos of native speakers talking. The opportunities for output include completing several worksheets, taking part in group discussions , video recording their verbal comments for a real audience and writing scripts for an online travel guide.

This webquest should take a week to complete and has been divided into daily tasks/activities (see Process page).

It is assumed that in the first lesson the teacher will guide students through the webquest, explaining the task, process and evaluation, and answering any student queries.

NB!!!     The webquest actually begins on the Task page with review and analysis of  travel writing examples where students first individually and then collectively identify the language features and genre characteristic. Depending on the level of knowledge and experience of students you may choose to skip this stage .

Formal assessment is of students' video presentation 'I Love the Gong' and their final travel guide/itinerary, and there are plenty of opportunities to informally assess students output and learning, for example when they are engaged in group collaboration and when they upload their written drafts to the class wiki for the teacher to highlight mistakes to be corrected by students.
