Day 1 Let's get personal!

Now that you've looked at the exanples of  travel guides/itineraries and identified some of the language features used it's time to look at what travel means to you.

What are your personal experiences of travelling?

  • Individually complete questions 1 to 5 on Worksheet (Resource 1).

Day 2 What do You Know and Love about Wollongong?

  • In your group complete questions 6-8 on worksheet 1
  • Then, using Worksheet 2 (Resource 2) brainstorm what you know about tourist attractions in Wollongong and the surrounding area.
Have you visited any tourist attractions in the area?  What did you think of it?
What destinations do you think people would be interested in visiting? Why?
Is there anything unique about the area?

Now listen to what some locals say about Wollongong
  • Watch the 2 short YouTube videos ‘We love the Gong’. (Resources 3 and 4)
What are the top 3 things locals love about 'the Gong'? Use Worksheet 3 (Resource 5) to list 3 three things/places/activities that you love about 'the Gong'? Why do you love them?
  • Create your own ‘We Love the Gong’ video with each member of your group expressing your personal opinion of what you love about the Gong. Remember to begin with the statement 'I love the Gong because_________'.
  • Upload your video to YouTube and call it 'We Love the Gong....' (please note that you will need to add a number at the end of the title.) (If you feel uncomfortable uploading your image to the Internet you can just record your voice and a visual.)

Day 3 Traveller Types

Individually, before you look at the five different types of travellers on the Tourism NSW website...

  •  Click on 'Mindset Match’ (Resource 6) and try to match up the 5 traveller ‘types’ with the 5 traveller ‘mindsets’ (A mindset is a way of thinking). Feel free to use an online dictionary.
Warning! One of these words has been invented by the market researchers! Can you work out which word it is based on?

  • Now click on the 'Traveller Pictures' (Resource 7) and see if you can guess which picture fits each traveller type.

  • Then, click on the ‘Traveller Types’ (Resource 8) and read the definitions of the types of travellers. There is a vocabulary list (Resource 9) for some of the difficult words.Use Worksheet 4 (Resource 10) to take notes.

  • In your group compare your notes and divide the traveller types among yourselves.

  • Now you can start your research!
Use Worksheet 5 (Resource 11) to take notes  for each category: activities, accommodation and dining.
Use more than one worksheet if you have lots of ideas!
Check out some of the general travel websites for Wollongong (Resources 12 to 18).

Day 4 Research and Writing

  • Finish your research so you can get started on writing your guide and itinerary using MSWord.
  • Start writing your guide and itinerary. Use your notes from Worksheet 5.
Use the links provided to review writing techniques (Resources 19 t0 23) and use the  the structure of the 3 examples in the introduction to the webquest as a guide:

Short introduction/overview of Wollongong (put at least 2 suggestions for accommodation  here.)
Day 1
Day 2
A short conclusion or final sentence.

At the end of the day...
  • post your draft on the class wiki for your teacher to point out any mistakes for you to correct tomorrow (Resource 24).

Day 5 Finetuning,  Creating a Questionnaire, Uploading and You're Done!

  • Present a draft of your travel guide to your group for feedback. Be prepared to justify your suggestions. Each member of the group must contribute feedback. Write your final draft and upload it to the class wiki (Resource 24). Don't forget to upload some pictures to support your text!

  • As a group, use your collective knowledge of the traveller types to create a short questionnaire (5 questions) for potential visitors to find out what type of traveller they are. The first question has been done for you as an example:

1 Do you like...
a)...being pampered?
b)...holidaying with your children?
c)...visiting historical buildings?
d)...hiking in the wilderness?
e)...partying all night?

(Mostly 'a' answers would be luxury travellers, b's family travellers etcetera.)

Upload your questionnaire to the class wiki.

If you don't know how to upload information on a wiki here is a YouTube tutorial to explain how! (Resource 25).
