Handy Manny Paints a Pattern

Topic:  Extending, creating, and identifying patterns

Time span:  This webquest is designed to be completed within an hour.  This should take about 45 minutes, but an hour time gap would be best especially for your slower workers.  You may use this however you would like, but I find that it works great as a center at the end of a pattern unit. 

This webquest is intended to be used at the end of a unit on patterns.  It covers many different types of patterns like growing patterns, AB patterns, ABC patterns, ABB patterns, and ABCC patterns.  The websites in this webquest use a lot of symbols and shapes to represent patterns, as well as real objects and sounds to teach the students that there can be patterns present anywhere. 

One modification that we incorporated with our webquest is the use of audio to accompany the directions for the webquest.  Because this is a kindergarten webquest, we felt that it would be beneficial to have the audio with it because not all kindergarten students know how to read.  The students who are having a harder time grasping patterns and how to identify the type of pattern could work with a partner on this webquest. 

The assessment that the students complete, where they identify the pattern and then say what type of pattern it is, is a completion grade.  This worksheet is at the bottom of the page and should be given to the students before they start the webquest, so they can work on it during the webquest.  We just want to make sure the students are doing the worksheet and it will be a spot check to see if the patterns they complete and create are actually patterns and not just random coloring.
