Who was Christopher Columbus?

This WebQuest was developed for secondary Social Studies students, grades 10-12. Students should have a basic knowledge of the historical circumstances leading up to the age of explorers; and they should have a basic knowledge of the Earth's continents and seas. Students will also know how to add content and create pages on the class wiki site.

This WebQuest incorporates the following Show Me state standards in Social Studies:
2. Continuity and change in the history of Missouri, the United States and the world
3. Principles and processes of governance systems
4. Economic concepts (including productivity and the market system) and principles (including the laws of supply and demand)
5. The major elements of geographical study and analysis (such as location, place, movement, regions) 
and their relationships to changes in society and environment
6. Relationships of the individual and groups to institutions and cultural traditions
7. The use of tools of social science inquiry (such as surveys, statistics, maps, documents)

This WebQuest also incorporates the following Show Me State Standards in English:
1. Speaking and writing standard English (including grammar, usage, punctuation, spelling, capitalization)
3. Reading and evaluating nonfiction works and material (such as biographies, newspapers, technical  manuals)
4. Writing formally (such as reports, narratives, essays) and informally (such as outlines, notes)
5. Comprehending and evaluating the content and artistic aspects of oral and visual presentations 
(such as story-telling, debates, lectures, multimedia productions)
7. Identifying and evaluating relationships between language and culture

This WebQuest also incorporates the following Show Me State Standards in Science:
8. Impact of science, technology and human activity on resources and the environment

This WebQuest incorporates the following National Educational Technology Standards (NETS) for Teachers:
1A. Teachers promote, support and model creative and innovative thinking and inventiveness.
1B. Teachers engage students in exploring real-world issues and solving authentic problems using digital tools and resources.
1C. Teachers promote student reflection using collaborative tools to reveal and clarify students' conceptual understanding and thinking, planning and creative processes.
1D. Teachers model collaborative knowledge construction by engaging in learning with students, colleagues and others in face-to-face and virtual environments.
2A. Teachers design or adapt relevant learning experiences that incorporate digital tools and resources to promote student learning and creativity.
2B. Teachers develop technology-enriched learning environments that enable all students to pursue their individual curiosities and become active participants in setting their own educational goals, managing their own learning and assessing their own progress.
2C. Teachers customize and personalize learning activities to address students' diverse learning styles, working strategies and abilities using digital tools and resources.
2D. Teachers provide students with multiple and varied formative and summative assessments aligned with content and technology standards and use resulting data to inform learning and teaching.









After completing this WebQuest, students will have a better understanding of how to evaluate historical and current events. They will know how to better work with others in a team; and they will have learned how to create a consensus of opinion. Students will also have sharpened their research skills and their efficiency on Web 2.0 tools. Students will be much better historians as they approach the remainder of their historical studies.
