Who was Christopher Columbus?

Process

Students' first step is to decide which team members will take which roles and post that list to the class wiki on the first day of the assignment. The cartographer is responsible for creating a map with all relative information in place. The three historians will look at this subject from three different perspectives. Historian No. 1 will focus on the life of Christopher Columbus. Historian No. 2 will focus on Native Americans. Historian No. 3 will focus on the role of explorers and exploration. Finally, the rover's job is to help the other team members with their tasks. It is important for the rovers to stay busy with tasks just as the other team members are. If any of your team members do not have enough work to do, then you may not be digging hard enough for information. If your team members are overburdened with work, even with the rover's help, then you're probably digging too deep. Any team member that finishes his/her part of the project can help others if they wish. See the team rubric and individual rubric to get an idea of what is expected from team members.

Teams will create a new page or pages on the class wiki site. They will put their finished product on the wiki page(s). Multiple pages probably works better, but that is up to the team. Either way, remember to apply the techniques we learned during our introduction to the class wiki. There are no written materials to turn in, except for the individual team member rubric at the end of the assignment. Team wikis should be informative, helpful, easy to read and understand; and visually pleasing. All teams must have the following information on their completed wiki:

1. Introduction (with a thesis)
2. Map of Columbus' journeys to the New World
3. Columbus biography
4. Native Americans
5. Explorers
6. Conclusion (with bonus answers and bibliography)

Be creative! Use videos, podcasts, images, whatever resources you can find to complete your project. Remember to be respectful and use common sense when constructing your pages. Any offensive material will result in a zero for your project and your team. (There is a difference between 'offensive' and 'controversial.') As we have already discussed, be very careful when using '.com' websites. If you're not sure, I can take a look for you. I have provided many sources on the Links page, but you will have to look for other sources as well. Use the YouTube videos on each page to get a sense of the subject matter included.

Below are attached files describing the individual processes as they apply to the different team members. Students are required to only read the checklists that apply to them. See below to make sure which checklists you should read. Each team member has slightly different approaches to their specific tasks.

As always, through any part of this assignment, if you have questions please do not hesitate to ask me. That is what I am here for. If I have provided you with instructions that you do not fully understand, ask! Best of luck with your WebQuest.

Bonus question (3 pts): When was Columbus Day made into a national holiday? Who was the president that made it official? What other aspect of American history is often celebrated on that day?
