Process

1.  You need to learn more about this "Ring of Fire."  Where exactly is it located? Your first task to to map out the "Ring of Fire."  Using the following links, print out a map of the Pacific area and highlight the location of the "Ring of Fire" and label the surrounding land masses.  Next, write a one-paragraph description of the "Ring of Fire" using Microsoft Word for your final copy.     http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Pacific_Ring_of_Fire.svg                             http://www.worldatlas.com/aatlas/infopage/ringfire.htm                     http://www.universetoday.com/guide-to-space/earth/ring-of-fire-volcanoes/

2.  Now that you know where it is, what do tectonic plates boundaries have to do with the "Ring of Fire"?  Using the following links, you will need to complete the graphic organizer attached under the resource file below about the types of tectonic plate boundaries and how each type of movement may occur.                                            http://pubs.usgs.gov/gip/dynamic/understanding.html#anchor15039288  http://science.nationalgeographic.com/science/earth/the-dynamic-earth/plate-tectonics-article/      http://www.cotf.edu/ete/modules/msese/earthsysflr/plates1.html

3.  Tectonic plates are a part of Earth's lithosphere.  Your third task is to research and create an illustration labeling the parts of the Earth on poster board including the following: lithosphere, asthenosphere, and mesosphere.  Use the following links to help you.    (Your textbook will also be helpful)        http://www.eduweb.com/portfolio/earthsystems/plate_tectonics/tectonics1.html                  http://www.washington.edu/burkemuseum/geo_history_wa/The%20Restless%20Earth%20v.2.0.htm

4.  Now that you know the parts of the Earth, it's time to find out more about volcanoes and earthquakes.  This information should be presented in a Power Point presentation with the inclusion of pictures.  Make sure to answer the following questions in your presentation:   What is a fault? What happens at tectonic plate boundaries that can cause earthquakes? Why are the boundaries of tectonic plates a likely place for volcanoes?  What is the difference between explosive and nonexplosive volcanic eruptions?                                                                                          http://www.kidsgeo.com/geology-for-kids/0037-the-earth-earth-inside-out.php         http://www.kidsgeo.com/geology-for-kids/0063-faults-and-erosion.php

5.  After everything that you've learned, it's time to discuss with your group whether it would be a good decision for you to go to Poca Boca for the summer.  At the end of your Power Point presentation, include a slide with you group's final decision and why you came to that conclusion.
