We will now work together with our rows in each group there will be six people to complete our family project in Social Studies. Each row  will be called over one at a time to work on the computers with the teacher, or teacher's helper to complete the WebQuest on why families are so very special and unique to us. The other children will continue working on a project as they wait.

Centers

Math: We will work with addition and subtraction on our white boards about how many people are in our families. We will also, make word problems about how many people are in our families. For example my word problem would be like this 2+2=4. Two children plus two adults.

Science: We will use finger paint to draw our family and our houses. You can be as creative as you wish. Remember to always try your best. You then can write one to two sentences about your family. We will be hanging this pictures around the classroom for Parent Conference Meeting. I cannot wait until I see your wonderful work and families.

Family word cards will be set out for you to practice with. You may choose to trace the letters with your fingers, use lacing strings to form letters/words, or write on blank paper with pens/pencils/crayons/markers. You will be able to listen to the stories by using the head phones.

Daily WebQuest Activities

Monday: Today you will start by telling everyone who lives with you in your house. First, watch the We're a Family Video, and then go to the Who lives in my house? activity. Add everyone that lives with you into the house. Print out your house when you have finished the activity. Look at each picture from your group. Are they all the same? What is the same and different about each family? How many people are in each family, and what are their names? Just like each one of you is different and special from your classmates, each of your families is different and special too!

Now that you have completed your Who lives in my house? paper, you may go to the art center and make a page for your book. Today you are going to draw a picture of your family at your house. Give lots of attention to details. Write the name that you call each family member next to their picture.
The house in your picture should look like your real house, and your family members should look like your real family! Put your Who lives in My house? papers as well as your book pages in your folder so you can work on the next page tomorrow!

Tuesday: Today we will talk about how each family member helps out. What jobs do you have? Do you have chores that you do? What do your other family members help with at home? Who works at a job to make money for food, clothes, and other supplies, and what do they do? How do you all help each other? Does every family help each other in the same ways, or in different ways? Watch the Monster Chores Video.

Print out the How my family helps each other... chart for each member of your team, and fill in the names of your family members (Don't forget about yourself!), and how they help your famliy. You may draw pictures or write the words and also write complete sentences about your family.

After you finish your How my family helps each other..., go to the art center to work on the next page of your book. Create an illustration of your family doing things to help each other.  Give lots of attention to details. Write the name that you call each family member next to their picture.
Make your picture as realistic as possible. The places in your picture and your family members should look like the real places and like your real family! Put your How my family helps each other... chart as well as your book pages in your folder so you can work on the next page tomorrow!

Wednesday: On Monday you discovered that everyone has a different family, with different people in them. On Tuesday you learned that families help each other, and each person has jobs that contribute to the family. Today you will  create a family tree. Everyone will have to create a family tree to describe and explain how everyone is related to one another. We also, can bring in tiny pictures to glue next to everyones name on your family tree.

Who were your Mom's parents? Who were your Dad's parents? That's right, your grandparents! How many grandparents do you have? What about your great-grandparents? It is interesting to look at your Family Tree and see how your family fits together, and how you fit in with them. Watch Tigger's Family Tree Video.

Use the family list that you brought from home (Monday night's homework) to fill in the Family Tree page and print it out. When you have finished, go to the art table to work on the next page of your book. Today you will create a family tree of your own. You will use the Family Tree page that you just created to make sure you get all your family members listed. In each space draw a picture of that family member and write their name. Make your picture as realistic as possible with lots of detail, your family members should look like your real family! When you have finished  put your Family Tree chart as well as your book pages in your folder so you can work on the next page tomorrow!

Thursday: You have discovered who is in your family, and that everyone's family is different. You have also discovered how you help your family, and how they help you. Yesterday you got to see how you fit into your family when you created your family tree. Families all have different people in them, and they are all different from anybody else's family...families help each other, and every family member has different jobs that they do to help...every family fits together, and you fit in with yours!

Now it is time to find out where your family's last name came from, and some of the history behind it. You are going to search for your family crest and coat of arms! A family crest and coat of arms are what was used in medievel times to identify specific families. These coats of arms were designed with things that were important to the family, things that helped describe them. Watch the Middleton Coat of Arms Video (stop at the 0:51 time mark) to learn a little more about the symbolism of a family coat of arms. When you look yours up, pay attention to where your name came from, as this is probably where your family came from before they immigrated to the United States, also look at the picture in each section to try to figure out what is says about the family. Now go to the Family Coat of Arms Search, and type your last name into the search bar. Print out a copy of your crest and coat of arms. We will make a coat of arms about our family and their heritage. You can draw, write sentences, or words to describe your family and ancestors.

Now you are going to create a family crest of your own at the art table for the next page of your book. Draw your family crest and coat of arms shape, andy shape you want, using most of your page...think BIG! Then divide your shape into three sections, creating an illustration of something that is important to your family in each section. Give lots of detail! When you have finished put your Family Coat of Arms print-out as well as your book page in your folder so you can work on the next page tomorrow!

Friday: This week we explored families. You have discovered who is in your family, and that everyone's family is different. You have also discovered how you help your family, and how they help you.  You got to see how you fit into your family when you created your family tree. You also researched your family coat of arms and then created your own. Families all have different people in them, and they are all different from anybody else's family...families help each other, and every family member has different jobs that they do to help...every family fits together, and you fit in with yours! Watch the We Are Family Video.

Today you are going to create a collage about all the things that are different and special about your own family, and what makes you and them special and unique. Go to the art table, and use the magazines and other material there to cut out pictures that you feel represent your family. You might add pictures of family members, things you and your family like to do together, or ways that you help each other. Be creative! This is the last page of your book, My Family is Special! When you have completed your collage, you need to create a cover for your book. Remember to Include the title, and the author...you!
