Mutation and Genetic Change

The picture above shows on the left, a red blood cell that is sickle-shaped, and on the right, a normal red blood cell.  Which cell has underwent a mutation?  Did you know that 1 out of 400 African Americans has sickle cell anemia, which is caused by a mutation in the gene that produces hemoglobin.  Blood cells with the defective hemoglobin tend to bend, rupture, and get stuck preventing the transport of oxygen.  Watch the video below for better understanding.
