To assist in your study of the book trouble don't last included in the resource section on this page are the lesson plans we developed in our class study of the book. We hope you will find them helpful. They are based on State of Ohio Curriculum Standards. We are also including chapter vocabulary lists and supplemental reading lists for your use.

Due to the graphic nature and hostile experiences of slavery, as teachers we must be aware of the language and situation students will be exposed to while reading material on this subject.

We found some of the most interesting and thought-provoking discussions we held in our class were the spirited ones on topics many still consider taboo. We hope you will use a discussion of language of the era as a sensitive forum to learn about how words can be divisive and hurtful; and how we can learn from past mistakes and celebrate diversity today.
