Remapping the Tour de France One Stage at a Time

Focus:
This WebQuest basically focuses on le Tour de France (a 23 stage bicycle race which spans three weeks).  This project acts as a "vehicle" to get students exploring:

-  the geography of France
-  the culture of France including the "small c" culture of the small town
-  marketing
-  advanced power point
-  persuasive writing

-  the use of 21st Century collaborative skills as much of the work is done and stored online

 

Objectives/Goals:

This WebQuest fall in line with the Essential Questions, Enduring Understandings, and Standards as presented by the Delaware Department of Education World Language Curriculum Documents.  Here is an excerpt which applies directly to this project:

 

Goal 2: Cultures
Gain knowledge of other cultures through the study of language
Standard 2.1 Students demonstrate knowledge of social patterns and conventions and interact appropriately in cultural settings.
Standard 2.2 Students demonstrate knowledge and understanding of significant components of the cultures being studied, such as traditions, institutions, art, history, music, and literary and artistic expressions, among others.


Big Ideas
Culture and language are inseparable; they influence and reflect each other.


Enduring Understanding

• A people’s perspectives, practices and products are windows to their culture.
• Language and culture are inseparable, like body and soul.
• Language and culture evolve. They are bound by people, time and place.

 

Essential Questions
• What is a culture? What is the connection between a people’s perspectives, practices, products and their language?
• How do language and culture influence and reflect each other?
• How do people, time and place affect language and culture?

Scope and Sequence:

This WebQuest can be done in "tandem" with a unit on transportation or sports.  It requires no use of the Target Language so it could be done by students of any language level.  Due to the collaborative nature of the tasks and the overall use of application, evaluation, and computer skills, it is recommended for secondary level students. 

 

Extensions:

This Web Quest could easily converted to French and could require use of the target language for some or all of the components.  In addition, you could expand it to the LeMans car race.

 

Materials required:

Computer Access for all students.

Minimum of three days computer / Internet time based on a 90 minute block schedule

Work area for display poster

Computer and Projector for Presentations
