Sequence:

  • This webquest will take place after students have studied the three branches of the United States Government and the parts of the Consitution in great detail. Students will also have studied many significant events in United States' history.
  • Prior to completing this in-depth webquest, all students will participate in an introductory scavenger hunt about Washington, D.C.
  • Before accessing websites for the DCquest, students will need instruction on how to site their resources. Students will use the chart on their role sheets to document websites used and to create endnotes for facts they record. 
     


The Following Goals/Objectives are met by all students participating in the DCquest.
NC SCOS Goals and Objectives (5th Grade)
Social Studies
2.01 Analyze major documents that formed the foundations of the American idea of constitutional government.
2.02 Describe...national levels of government in the US and explain their legislative, executive, and judicial functions.
4.01 Define the role of a historian and explain the importance of studying history.
4.03 Describe the contributions of people of diverse cultures throughout US history.
6.04 Determine how citizens in the US and other countries of North America can preserve fundamental values and beliefs in a world that is rapidly becoming more technologically oriented.

Computer/Technology Skills
Goal 1: The learner will understand important issues of a technology-based society and will exhibit ethical behavior in the use of computer and other technologies.
1.12 Recognize and explain the advantages and disadvantages of using multimedia to develop content area projects/products.
Goal 2: Demonstrate knowledge and skills in the use of computers and other technologies.
Goal 3: Use a variety of strategies to access, analyze, interpret, synthesize, apply and communicate information.
3.01 Select and use search strategies with two or more criteria in prepared databases to create, organize, and present information for content area assignments.

English Language Arts
3.06 Conduct research (with assistance) from a variety of sources for assigned or self-selected projects.
4.02 Use oral and written language to: influence the thinking of others.
4.07 Compose a variety of fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and drama using self-selected topic and format.
4.10 Use technology as a tool to enhance and/or publish a product.


The following Goals/Objectives will be met by individuals as they study their specific DC topic.

Social Studies
2.03 Recognize how the United States government has changed over time.
4.05 Describe the impact of wars and conflicts on US citizens, from Civil War to the war on terrorism.
6.02 Relate how certain technological discoveries have changed history and reflect on the broader social and environmental changes that can occur from the discovery of such technologies.
