An interesting and fun web-based learning experiences for 3rd graders!

Background on the WebQuest: This webquest was created for Elementary students in grade 3. The Science Unit covered during this lesson is Earth Materials. Students will become more actively involved with the lesson and collaborate with peers to become Rock Detectives. They will learn about the different types of rocks (igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic). Upon completion of webquest students will be able to identify, classify, and learn to make the different rocks. An extension of this activity can be done by inviting students on a class trip to a rock and mineral spring (Earths Minerals Scratch Patch is an example) where the rocks can be discovered, made, and purchased for souvenirs!

The standard reflected in this webquest-SC Standard: 3-3.1 Classify rocks (including igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic)

Learners: This webquest is designed for third graders but can be modified and accomodated according to students needs/age group.

For the teacher: Students should have some knowledge of rocks and the different kinds before starting the webquest. Videos, readings, and class discussions should lead up to this particular activity, if not students may get lost during the research.

Students must be provided an ample amount of time to finish the webquest. Providing the students with at least 30 to 45 minutes each to complete the process will provide enough time to get the facts needed to complete the presentation at the end. It would be a good idea to provide a space with mutiple computers such as a computer lab for the students to work. This activity can also be extended over several days.
