Frederick Douglass

Process

The teacher will pass out a KWL chart to each student. The students will fill out what they know about Frederick Douglass already (it's okay if they don't know anything as this is the first day) and what they want to learn. For this specific task, the teacher will number the students off depending on how many students there are in the classroom. Then she will ask the 1's to sit somewhere (back table, carpet), the 2's, etc. Each group will receive a primary source document that they will be reading for examples of what positive characteristics Frederick Douglass displayed. The students will each take part in reading a portion of the text (one page total regardless of how many pages excerpt is). They are going to be writing notes down of the exact text that emphasizes Douglass' positive characteristics. The teacher should understand that the students will most likely not be able to comprehend the information written in these sources as the language is too complex and practically ancient for the students. The students are just looking for simple phrases, even one word. This means that they do not necessarily have to know what exactly it is that the text is saying. The students will be filling in their "What I Learned" column of the KWL chart during this time as well.
