Science Fiction Character Design

Before entering into the major character design project, these are a few activities to help you start to develop your ideas, thinking and interest in Science Fiction and Surrealism art.

The activities are listed first.  The order in which you complete the activities are listed under each artist below. 

A. What makes you say that?
This can be discussed as a group.
Two questions that you ask yourself when looking at the image or video.
1. What is going on? By asking this question you are looking to interpret what you see with in the picture or video.
2. What makes you say that? This second question asks you to justify your interpretation.
This will help you start to form a description of what you see.

B. Think Pair Share
This active is done in pairs.
Take a few minutes to think about the topic HR Giger, Avatar or Dr. Who.
- For Avatar and Dr. Who. Remember what you have seen and know about the different characters and costume designs you have seem in Avatar or Dr. Who.
- For HR Giger. Look at his work. What takes your interests? What are your first reactions to his work?
Now turn to your partner and takes turns in talking about your responses. Listen carefully and ask questions.
Record your thinking in your journal.

C. I see/ I think/ I wonder
This activity is to be recorded in your journal. Then share response with the class.
What do you see?
What do you think about that?
What does it make you wonder?

D. Perceive/ Know /Care about
This is going to be your core thinking when designing your character from the story.  First use it here when thinking about the characters from Avatar or Dr. Who.
This is to help you look at the characters differently and think deeply about their place in the story.  This will develop your thinking skills for describing what you see and later for designing your characters.
Look at the characters and ask
� What might this person/creature perceive?
� What might the person/creature know about or believe?
� What might the person/creature care about?
Record your responses in your journals?
