PART I: Define "Critical Literacy" and understand how to be critically literate.

  1. Skim the information provided on the website: About English - Critical Literacy.
  2. Read the following two sections taken from the article, "Critical literacy and everyday life." Section One, Section Two.
  3. Go to the section marked "Quiz" on this website and test your knowledge of critical literacy. There are nine questions. This quiz is not graded, but will become the basis for in-class discussion.
PART II: Learn how to corroborate information on the web.
  1. Read the article, Save the Pacific Northwest Tree Octopus.
  2. Use a search engine to locate additional information on the Tree Octopus.
  3. Choose another animal to research under the "Other Animals of Interest" section of the website.
  4. Read the article provided on that animal.
  5. Use a search engine to locate additional information on the animal.
  6. Complete the attached worksheet titled, "Corroboration and the Internet."
PART III: Explore a controversy about a celebrity and write an opinion essay.
  1. Choose a controversy regarding a celebrity that has been in the news within the past three months. (For example, football star Ben Roethlisberger's six game suspension).
  2. Get your topic approved by your instructor.
  3. Locate a minimum of four websites that discuss the controversy from varying viewpoints. (Note, one article may be in your home language. If you chose an article in your home language, you will also need to provide a two-three paragraph written summary of the article with your Website Evaluation Form).
  4. Complete a "Website Evaluation Form" for each website chosen (form is attached).
  5. Write a one-two page, single-spaced opinion essay. See the attached assignment sheet titled "Opinion Essay."
