Living With Autism

Having Autism Is Like This.....

It may feel like you are visiting another world when you visit the world of Autism. You will visit this new world with your friends!

You will work with your partner and one peer who has Autism this week.  Some of you may have missed the day that __’s__Mom visited and told us about our friend. Although___’s__Mom helped us to learn about____,  these lessons will help you to learn more and to help our friends with Autism to learn. Please write in your journal about each activity and your feelings about the activity.

Some of the activities are to be completed alone and others will be with your partners. If the activity is for you alone, you will see a star at the end. * If the activity is for you  and your partner, you will see two stars.**  If the activity is for you, your partner and one friend with Autism, you will see three stars. ***

Activity 1: You will read the definitions of Autism so that you have a clear understanding of the meaning.*Click here and read pages 1, 2, and 3 with the reader. Activity 2: Next you will read a pamphlet about a boy named “Oliver”.* Oliver has Autism too. Each person with Autism is different, just like each person without Autism is different. We are all unique. Please click on the link below and read guide page 1 and guide page 2. You may read them on the page that shows or you may save to computer and read them, as the directions will tell you. Don't forget journal. http://www.thepeacefamily.force9.co.uk/guide.html

Activity 3:  Click on the number 3 URL below or on the link here to read an online book about a boy with Autism. This book was written by the boy’s sister. * You can use "enter" to flip pages. If you use the link here,  you may need to scroll down to view each page of the book if your computer does not flip page when you tap "enter". Activity 4: Now it is time do an activity with your partner. ** You will take turns. Click on number 4 URL  or the link here and follow the instructions for number one in the activities (in the blue area).  What does it feel like to get the paper clips out of the rice?  If you would like, you may do another one of the activities listed. Activity 5: This is an activity for your group. You, your partner and your friend with Autism will play “Candy Land”.*** While you play with your friend who has Autism, your partner will video and then you will video your friend while he plays the game.  All three of you will watch the video afterwards. Click on Number 5 below in resources to read instructions. (Save to computer and then read) You will participate in a discussion with your teacher and your group about your feelings while playing this game. Please write about it in your journal.

Activity 6: Read the book “All About My Brother” by Sarah Peralta.* This book is kept on our table of books for the week. Do the activity listed in this link. Go to number 4 in this link (Autism Awareness Questions) and print out the sheet or you can click on number 6 down in the resources and print the question sheet. Complete the activity and place it in the teacher's box. If you are in another school, ask your teacher to help you find the book in a library. Please journal.

Activity 7:  Please click on "Evaluation" to read about how you will be graded. Please click on "Conclusion" on the left side of this screen and follow the instructions.
