Day 3:

  • Today you are going to learn about the economics of Jamestown, that is, how the colonists survived, what resources were available, what they had to learn those first few years in the New World.
  • Use the links below (#s 3, 4, & 5) to refresh your memory on what you learned in day 1 as well as learning how this new colony survived. Make a list (words and/or pictures) of at least 5 crops and resources the colonists used. Identify the crop that proved to be most important to them.
Day 4:
  • Today you are going to work in groups of 4 to study the geography of Jamestown.
  • You will need to explore the Jamestown--Geography websites listed below to gather ideas about what it was like in and around Jamestown. Was it located on the shore? Were there rivers around? Were there any notable physical characteristics? How did the colonists interact with the Powhatan Indians? How did they get from place to place? Did they exchange goods (trade)? What was the land like? Hills? Marshes? Prairie? Mountains? Were there different cultures?
  • You can use lots of different ways of addressing your questions but you must produce a visual representation that includes at least one thing for each of the following themes: location, place, human/environment interaction, movement, and region. Your visual representation can be anything you want it to be, such as a map, picture, drawing, or drama.  You can create these yourselves, find visual representations on-line or locate graphics from other resources. Be creative and have fun.
  • You will have extra time today (and maybe tomorrow) to collect your research and create your product. The idea is for each group to present their findings of Jamestown to the class.
(Guess what? You just covered two more social studies topics: economics and geography!)
