What Makes A Good Story?

The rubric (below) for this assignment as been centered around the areas that you have researched. You are expected to apply as many of these techniques to your story to improve it. Remember if it is not important to your story, do not not include it. You will not be marked down for not using specific techniques that you may have come across(if the are not applicable), however, you will be marked on the ones in the rubric which are techniques that are applicable to all stories.

Mechanical Structure: Grammar, spelling, punctuation and overall story layout/pace. The writing was full of mistakes. It was difficult to comprehend and mistakes greatly distracted the reader from the story. There was no direction for the story, it was poorly planned and executed. There was a sense of direction and immediacy in the story however, it was unclear and the story needed more planning. There were few mistakes. The story flowed smoothly and was relatively easy to read, with almost no distraction for the reader. There was a clear sense of direction, the planning was clear but the story progessed slowly. There were no mistakes. The writing was a profesional standard, the story flowed smoothly and there were no mistakes to distract the reader. Characterisation. The characters were unbelievable. They were inconsistent and poorly planned. They had no individuality and all seemed fairly similar. The characters were almost believable. They were 2D and contained very little depth. There were some slight differences however, the characters appeared relatively similar. The characters were believable. They contained some depth however there could be more development. They varied from each other but still contain similarities in their characteristics. The characters were very believable. They contain alot of depth and the reader could relate to them. They varied greatly from each other and had no similarities. 30%
Show Don't Tell Technique. The story consistantly told the reader what was happening, making it boring to read. There were a few examples of the show don't tell technique however these were limited. There was still a lot of telling the reader information. There is more needed to help the flow of the story. There were many exellent examples of showing not telling. However there were still occasions when the reader was told information which occasionally slowed the story down. The story was filled with information being showed to the reader making it easy for the reader to continue through the story. 20%
Atmosphere. Your story had no sense of atmosphere. There was no attempt at using background information for creating atmosphere. The story's atmosphere was beginning to form however, more work is needed. You used a little bit of background information for the reader to create the story, however this needs to be developed further. The reader had a good sense of the atmosphere the story was creating. There was a good use of background information to create it however, there could have been a little bit more to give the reader more information. There was a clear sense of atmosphere. The reader felt satisfied that they had all the information they need from the story. 20%
