Standards

Strand 1: American History:
Concept 1: Research Skills for History.
PO 3. Use primary source materials (e.g. photos, artifacts, maps,) to study people and events from the past.
Strand 2: World History
Concept 1: Research Skills for History.
PO 2. Retell stories to describe past events, people, and places.
Strand 3: Civics/Government
Concept 4: Rights, Responsibilities, and Role of Citizenship.
PO 3: Discuss the importance of students contributing to a community (e.g. helping others, working
together, cleaning up the playground.)
Strand 4: Geography
Concept 4: Human Systems
PO 1: Discuss elements of cultural (e.g., food, clothing, housing, sports, holidays) of a community in areas
studied (e.g., local community, Arizona, Egypt)
Strand 5: Economics
Foundations of Economics

Objectives
Strand 1: The students will understand the importance of Martin Luther King Jr. and what he did for our country.
Students will write about what they think of Martin Luther King Jr.
Strand 2: The students will work together to make a collage.
The students will draw their favorite character.
The students will use materials to make Indian headbands.
Strand 3: The students will identify community helpers.
The students will draw a picture and label community helpers. They will also build a community.
Strand 4: The students will identify different factory made materials and land-grown materials.
Strand 5: The students will match the correct amount of currency to the price of various items.
Students will be able to properly distinguish quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies.

Differentiated Instruction
The teacher will modify the lessons to meet the needs of all students such as ELL's, students with special needs, and struggling readers. Teachers will use different strategies to teach the same concept according to the needs of the students.
