Introduction
This is a unit that uses language, culture and geography to investigate differences and similarities between nations. The lesson is intended to create an understanding as to why cultures are the way they are and as to how we can better live together.

Learners
This lesson is designed for 6th graders using the most recent Oregon state standards. Basic computer skills and Internet navigation is needed.

Standards
SS.05.CG.07 Recognize and give examples of how nations interact with one another through trade, diplomacy, cultural contacts, treaties, and agreements.

EL.06.RE.03 Listen to, read, and understand a wide variety of informational and narrative text, including
classic and contemporary literature, poetry, magazines, newspapers, reference materials, and online information.

Process
This WebQuest is intended to be taught over many class periods. At least 6 45min class sessions are recommended. Because many of the sites can be explored for much longer it is up to the teacher to set guidelines as to how much "exploring" is allowed. The strength of this WebQuest comes from its interdisciplinary connections and thus can be taught as a standalone or incorporate it in single study classes.
Students should be divided up into groups of four and then partners within the group. Based on your class this can be done ahead of time or let the students choose.
This WebQuest is fairly straightforward and does not need any special attention. Novice to advanced teachers will be able to guide students through the quest.
A computer lab with enough computers for each pair of students is recommended.

Resources
*Computers for each pair of students(13-16 approx)
*A notebook to write in. One for each student.
*Plain white paper for Brochure. One for each group(6-8)
*The book The King Who Rained (4 or 5 copies)

Conclusion
This lesson just scratches the surface of this topic and could be added to in a variety of ways. Many of the cultures that are explored have wonderful food, customs and geography that can be explored in a hands on setting. I would take the opportunity to expand on this quest if at all possible.
