 Target Learners

The main target learners for this WebQuest are Form One PSD students (aged between eleven and twelve). However, it can also be used for slightly younger or older teenagers.

Notes for teaching the unit:

It is suggested that prior to showing students this WebQuest they are shown a Power Point presentation that gives them some background information on smoking. Relevant points to mention in the Power Point presentation include:

effects of smoking

some basic statistics, for example, on how many teenagers smoke and how many cigarettes they smoke

reasons why teenagers smoke

prevention and ways to say 'no' to peer pressure

effects smoking has apart from on one's health (such as bad breath and yellow teeth)

It is also recommended that a video on smoking and its effects is included as part of the Power Point presentation.

Focus:

The Webquest highlights the theme of Smoking. It is designed to help students question smoking and reflect upon its effects. Through the questionnaire and the Power Point, it is hoped that students think twice about starting to smoke before they succumb to peer pressure. Moreover, the aim of this WebQuest is to encourage students who already smoke to begin saying 'NO' to both cigarettes and peers who may be pressuring them to smoke.

 Objectives/Goals:

It is suggested that this topic is linked with health awareness which also includes personal hygiene and nutrition. At the end, one can intertwine smoking with these topics. It is hopes that he student may be able to elicit his/her own point of view from a more informed stance regarding smoking, personal hygiene and nutrition.

Students should be able to take the knowledge learnt through this WebQuest and Power Points through life and should be encouraged to link the skills learnt (such as being assertive when saying 'NO') to other contexts.
