Nutrition and Fitness Webquest

Task

Your job is to help American teens to create and maintain a healthy lifestyle.  The goal of you and your partner is to create a newsletter that will show people the importance of establishing and maintaining a healthy life.  In order to do this you will be working as a nutritionist and personal trainer.  You will become an expert in your particular area in order to form a comprehensive newsletter.  You will start by choosing the role you will become an expert on.  From there you will use the knowledge you already have and the resources located in the Process section to browse through different websites and find the information needed.  Information that should be included in your newsletter are:

  • Nutrition facts about the 6 essential nutrients       
  • Why each nutrient is needed
  • What foods contain each nutrient
  • How to read food labels
  • Healthy snacks and recipes
  • How many calories a typical 14 year old male and female need
  • How stress affects health
  • The components of fitness
  • How to develop an appropriate fitness plan
  • What an good fitness plan looks like
  • Examples of lifelong activities to stay active
  • Exercise tips for healthy weight management

The Nutritionist:

The job of the nutritionist is to explain the importance of nutrition.  The nutritionist will explain the essential nutrients, their functions and foods they are found in.    They will provide an example (on a separate sheet of paper) of 3 days worth of meals including the correct number of servings a typical 14 year old should have in each food group along with the calories that would be consumed for each meal.  They will also include information about how to read and use a food label.  The nutritionist is the food expert!

The Personal Trainer:

The job of the personal trainer is to become knowledgeable about fitness.  You will be explaining the components of fitness along with providing examples of different types of exercises that would fall into each category.  You will provide an example (on a separate sheet of paper) of a 3 day fitness plan and include the amount of calories that would be burned after the workout.  You will also provide tips for weight management along with suggestions of recreational activities that would encourage an active lifestyle.  In addition you will need to discuss stress and how it affects one’s health.  The personal trainer is the fitness expert!
