Day 3, Think Like a Historian!
Do you know that you can find out a lot of information about a person without ever meeting them?
Primary source documents are one of the best ways to find out information about people you have
never met.  Primary source documents are written records like government reports,
diaries, journal entries, letters or postcards.  Historians use primary sources in their work. They
piece together information about a time, place, event, or person based on recorded information.
Primary sources are essential to the work historians do.  You will do the work of real historians by
examining the original documents of real immigrants that settled in the lower eastside of New
York City.  So get your journals ready!

Day 3,  Yesterday and today:Ellis Island & what changes have been made since the late 1800's.Visit http://www.history.com/interactives/ellis-island to view the photos available, then research an additional site with  photos of Ellis island then and now.Journal the differences of any updates that was not present then, but are present today.

Day 4, Historians, it's time to read!Choose three books on the immigration experience from an adult and child's point of view. The contents can include the experience of a family or an individual.Include any photos you would like to add. These books can be from your own personal collections or from the library.I suggest starting with1.) Coming to America by: Betsy Maestro & illustration by: Susannah Ryan and 2.) Dreaming of America: An Ellis Island Story by: Eve Bunting & Ben Stahl.Students are required to read Heart and soul: the exciting life of the singing Trapp family by: Hans Wilhelm

Day 5, Now it's time to publish your work historians! It is now time to report your findings.  Choose one of the methods to report your research from
the choice board and let your teacher know which one you have chosen.Be creative historians!
