Process

  1. You will be assigned in to groups of 3-4 museum guides. Your role will be to plan a museum tour of the Metropolitan Museum of art for your class. You will have one hour to tour the museum and be able to visit one exhibit or 3-4 separate works of art.
  2. Start by exploring the museum's website individually. Begin at the museum's homepage (http://www.metmuseum.org/) and explore the museum's website.
  3. Next, visit the upcoming exhibits section (http://www.metmuseum.org/special/se_upcoming.asp) and look through the exhibits. Write down any upcoming exhibits that you think your class would enjoy visiting. Next, narrow down your selections to 1-2 exhibits and write down why they would be good choices for your class.
  4. Now visit the museum's permanent collection (http://www.metmuseum.org/Works_of_Art/collection_database/listview.aspx?page=1&sort=0&sortdir=&keyword=&fp=1&dd1=0&dd2=0&vw=1). Think about what you have learned in art so far this year. Search for artists, time periods or types of art you are learning about. Select up to 6 pieces you would like to visit.
  5. Now it is time to meet as a group and discuss your findings. Share your ideas with your group and listen to what they would like to see. After everyone has shared their ideas begin narrowing down the selections until you have agreed on one exhibit or 4 pieces of artwork to visit. Write down what you will visit and why it was chosen.
  6. Once you know what you would like to see create a timeline in Microsoft Word detailing how you will spend your time in the museum. The timeline should be 1 hour and 30 minutes long. Your timeline should include 15 minutes to check-in to the museum and 15 minute to check-out. One hour will be spent exploring the museum. Remember to include walking time from piece to piece if necessary and keep in mind the museum will likely be very crowded. Also include how long you will spend looking at each piece and what you will discuss about the piece. You can also allow your group sketching time at one of the pieces. This timeline will be used to ensure that you stay on schedule during your museum visit.
  7. Print out the museum's floor plans (http://www.metmuseum.org/visit/floorplans/). Using a dark marker or bright highlighter draw the path your group will take within the museum from entrance to exit. This map will help guide your group through the museum. Make sure everything is clearly labeled so you do not get lost!
  8. Create a word document for your class presentation. You will need to explain to your peers where you want to go in the museum and why. Be sure to teach them about each piece of artwork or the exhibit you would like to visit. How does it relate to what you are learning in class? Be sure to market your idea well so the class chooses your plan for their class trip! Good luck!
