This is the first part of a five part process of learning how to make conservation management plans.  It spells out step by step what learners will do, how they will interact with with the resources (the inputs) to produce a specified output.  This is why the resources for this quest are are arranged in a sequence.  First learn the vocabulary of environmentalism; then understand the planning cycle; then analyse how to care for the environment by producing a plan for a small part of local nature and finally compare that plan with those of national nature reserves in the UK and Uganda.

An objective or goal is a desired result or outcome that a person or a system envisions, plans and commits to achieve.  It is a personal or organizational desired end-point in some sort of assumed development. Many people endeavor to reach goals within a finite time by setting deadlines.

In order to find out at any time how far the plan is from its goal it is necessary to b able to measure the state of the feature being managed. The objective sets the state of the feature when the the goal is reached.  These measurable state are called performance indicators.
