Dump the parents!

Process

Step 1

Get into a group of 3 people. Once you have made a group, follow these steps in order to produce your folder.

Step 2

Open the 'Travel Planner' document. You will use this to write down important information relevant to your holiday. First fill-in the personal information. This is useful should anything happen while you are on your holiday or if your parents need to contact you. You will fill-in the rest of the information in the planner as you complete the steps.

The travel planner document has been started for you. All your work needs to be done and presented in this word document. Think about how you will present the exercises, the layout as well as any titles and headings you will use.

Step 3

Look at your school website and find out when your holidays are. Decide upon a date, which fits in with your holidays, when you want to make your trip to London.

Step 4 (individual tasks)

Divide the following tasks between your 3 group members:

  1. make travel arrangements from The Netherlands to London.
  2. book a hotel/hostel where you can stay in London.
  3. find out about London's public transport.

Before you complete these tasks it might be handy to click on this link and check the exchange rate between the Euro and the British Pound. Write down the exchange rate in your travel planner.

Travel - Arrange your travel tickets to London. You don't necessarily need to fly. There might be a cheaper option. Take a look at the following websites or you could even find another alternative.

Remember to tell your group members when you will fly so that they can book the correct dates for the accomodation.

Accomodation - Use google to find some accomodation where you can stay for 3 nights. Try to find somewhere with a good balance between location (close to the city centre), price and quality. You needn't stay in a hotel. There might be a nice youth hostel where you can stay too.

Public transport - First of all you might need to use public transport in The Netherlands to get to the airport or the ferry. you might need to travel by public transport from the airport to your hotel. You might also need to get back to the airport. How often do these trains or buses go and how much do they cost? You will no doubt need to use public transport while you are in London.

Put all these details in your travel planner.

Step 5

Meet back up with your group and list all your costs so far. Fill-in the costs in the budget form in the travel planner and add them up. How much have you spent? Remember, you only have a budget of €500. You still need to eat, drink, pay for tourist attractions and buy souvenirs for your family. Do you need to book a cheaper flight or hotel? If so, do this now but this time in your group.

Step 6

Now that you have arranged your trip, it's time to find out a little bit about London itself.

We have already done quite alot of work on the passive so far this year. Click on this link about Big Ben, London's famous clock (tower). Copy the text and paste it into a word document. Now, try to underline all examples of the passive in the text. If you need some help, click on the second attachment below which offers an explanation.

Did you find this text difficult? There were quite a few new words, weren't there? Type 10 of these new words underneath the text in your word document and find the meaning using an online dictionary. Remember, there may be more than one meaning. Make sure that you choose the correct one. Type the dutch meaning in your document too.

Step 7 (individual tasks)

Look on the internet and find a tourist attraction that you would like to visit in London. Make sure that you haven't chosen the same attraction as somebody else in your group.

  • Find out how you get there (where's the nearest tube station?) and how much the admission prices are. Fill these in on your travel planner and your budget.
  • Find out about the history and any interesting facts and make brief notes about these points.
  • While you are browsing look out for any use of the passive. Put 5 examples that you come across in your word document.
  • Now using the notes you made, write a brief history in word which you could read when you visit your chosen attraction. Find a picture as well and add this to your document. Try to include at least 3 passive sentences in your work. You need to write 250 words in English. Make sure that your work is your own and not copied from the websites.
  • Include a list of websites that you used to get your information.
  • When you have finished ask the other members of your group to check what you have written. Are there any spelling or grammar mistakes? Correct the mistakes and make improvements if necessary.

Should yu need help with any irregualr verbs when writing your piece. See the attachment below.

Step 8

Present all your work and information in the travel planner folder. Think about the layout and how you can make it visually attractive by adding pictures, etc. Check the evaluation page to see how your work will be graded. Try to make sure that your work meets all the criteria. Your teacher will tell you when the folder finally needs to be submitted.
