Welcome letter composers!  The following is your assignment for making a fun, interesting, and appealing letter home to England.  Remember, the colonies need new settlers and are relying on your creativity and accuracy of what life is like in the New England colonies.  Please work hard as a team for the survival of your family in the colonies.  Don't forget to have fun!

1.  You will be divided into groups of four.  You all will work together in class to write the introduction to your letter.  This introduction needs to include the following:
  • Accurate date for when this letter could be written according to the time line of the New England colonies.
  • Have accurate letter mechanics such as a heading, salutation, and proper indentation.
  • This can be hand written, typed in Word, or use link to template.
  • Must state the purpose of the letter to appeal to them to come to the colonies.

2.  Each group will chose who does which section of the body of the letter.  Each student does one section.  The sections are as follows:
  • Education-Where do you go to school?  How long is your school day?  How many students in your class?  What is your teacher like?  Is your education religious based?
  • Daily schedule-When do you get up?  When do you do chores?  What time do you eat meal?  How many days a week do you go to church and school?  When do you go to bed?
  • Religion-Are you allowed to practice your religion of choice?  How does this differ from your life in England?
  • Family support-How do you support your family?  Do you fish?  Do you have a farm?  What is that job like?  Do you help your family with this job?  Does your family sell goods?

3.  You all will work together in class to write the closing to your letter.  The closing needs to include the following:
  • Restate the purpose of the letter for them to enjoy the freedoms you have in the colonies.
  • Show interest in the readers well being.
  • Have a closing and signature.

10.  Presentation of letter to class:

On Friday one student will read the first paragraph along with their section. Two other students will each read their section to the class.  The last student will read their section along with the closing paragraph.

The readings will contain the following characteristics:
  • Pausing is used
  • Proper volume 
  • Easy to understand
  • Proper emphasis
  • Proper speed
