Seeds of Knowledge

Process

MY YOUNG GARDENERS!

In order to complete the set tasks given, you will be divided into groups of 4 pupils. You will assign a group leader and will need the following materials:

  • variety of fresh seeds such as corn, pigeon peas, red beans or lima beans
  • bowls, large clear jars, plastic bags
  • cotton, hand lens
  • labels, sentence strips
  • water, air, sunlight
  • journals, pencils
  • computers with internet access

Do not worry.......You will be guided by your teacher every step of the way.

DAY 1

Observing and Preparing seeds

Set Induction
  • View the 1st YouTube videos entitled "Starting to Grow".
  • Look at the Rubric and take note of the areas you will be graded on.


You will:

  1. Make sentence strips as a group  and attach to the K and W sections on the K-W-L Chart, found on the Evaluation page. 
  2. Ask a member of each group to take four different seeds.
  3. Describe seeds according to their names, shapes, colours, sizes and textures.
  4. Predict what you think will happen if seeds are put to soak.
  5. Put your seeds into a bowl of water and leave overnight.


DAY 2

Splitting of seeds

You will:
  1. View the 2nd and 3rd YouTube videos entitled "One Seed" and "The Seed".
  2. Ask a member of your group to take a bag labeled dry seeds and another labeled wet seeds (teacher prepared).
  3. Compare the dry seeds and wet seeds orally.
  4. Remove seed coats from the beans and dissect (split) beans using your fingernails.
  5. Use hand lens to observe what is seen in the beans.
  6. Discuss the parts of the seeds and the use of the seed coat.
  7. Draw and label the parts of the seed in your journals.
  8. Ensure that your respective work areas are clean.
  9. Fill in the L section on the K-W-L chart stating what you have learned.
  10. Recite the attached poems entitled "The Little Plant" and "I am a Little Seed". 


DAY 3

Planting & Gardening

You will:
  1. Review what was done on the previous day.  
  2. Receive your materials to begin seed planting- large clear jar, cotton and seeds.
  3. Line the jars with cotton and wet to keep cotton in place.
  4. "Plant" three (3) different seeds in different directions between the walls of the jars and the cotton.
  5. Write the procedure in your journals.
  6. Discuss what seeds need to grow.
  7. Participate in the two (2) attached Interactive Science Clips.
  8. Add more to the K-W-L Chart.


DAYS 4 - 5
(
Saturday - Sunday)

Seed Germination - Starting to Grow


You will:
  1. Place your jar near a window sill to receive sunlight.
  2. Give your seeds air by leaving the lids off the jar.
  3. Water them morning and evening (remember not to give them too much water).
  4. Observe the process of germination - as seeds “start to grow”.
  5. Record any changes in your journals, using drawings or pictures.


DAYS 6 - 10

Seed Germination- Amazing Discoveries


You will:
  1. Return to class with your jars of germinating seeds.
  2. View the 4th and 5th YouTube videos, which show how plants grow out of tiny seeds.
  3. Look at the rubric again and use it to make necessary changes for improvement.
  4. Show your journals to your teacher to check on your progress.
  5. Continue to provide your growing seeds with the right conditions.
  6. Make daily journal entries about the observations you make throughout the week.
  7. Use the Data Collection Sheet found on the Evaluation page to record the changes.
  8. View the final "Sing-along" YouTube video which illustrates the parts of a seedling.
  9. Complete all sections of your K-W-L Chart.
  10. Complete the attached worksheets found on the Evaluation page.


DAY 11 - 12
(Saturday to Sunday)

Preparing your Journals

You will:
  1. Prepare your journals for presentation.
  2. Use the rubric as your guide to make the necessary changes to improve the appearance and organization of your journals.
  3. Ask your parents for assistance.


DAY 13
(The Finale)

Journal
Presentation

You will:
  1. Participate in a short puppet show entitled “HAPPY SEEDS”.
  2. Illustrate your K-W-L Chart to the class, in your respective groups.
  3. Present your journals individually to your teacher.
  4. Invite the 4-H Club to view your seedlings.
  5. Visit your school's garden, which is maintained by the 4-H Club.
