Our Country's Dominance in Question

Process

1. Gather in your groups and decide what measurement area you will work in.

2. Find the commonly used units for your chosen type of measurement in both the metric and English systems and, on a separate piece of paper, write down the conversions within each system (? ft. = 1 yd.).

3. Decide whether the United States should stay with the English system, or make the final conversion to the metric system. Use the material found on these four sites to support your position.

http://lamar.colostate.edu/~hillger/#metric A lot of information can be found at the homepage of the USMA (United States Metric Association) including reasons to use the metric system and the history behind it.

http://metric4us.com/ A site promoting the metric system with information and answers to questions.

http://freedom2measure.org/ Freedom2Measure is an American organization trying to keep the English system in use. They give many reasons supporting their position.

http://www.bwmaonline.com/The%20Failure%20of%20Metrication%20by%20Education.htm A British organization promoting the return to the English system. This site provides information along with links to other sites both pro and anit-metric.

4. Organize your findings into a presentation that will last from 2-5 minutes. This presentation will include a short explanation of the chosen units from the English and metric systems, along with your decision and the details supporting your position.
