Who is the trickster?

Welcome to this webquest on Tricksters!

The subject of this webquest is �Tricksters�. You might not have a clue what this is about, so you will now begin your quest for the truth behind this word.

With your group open the introductory fact sheet (to be downloaded at the bottom of this page) in which you type in the answers to the questions that are stated below. Use the internet to answer the questions.

Mini quests

1. Find a picture of Eddy Murphy in which you see that he is playing a trick on somebody or preparing one.

 

2. Watch the video from Youtube at the bottom of this page. The scene that you just saw is part of the film �The Mask� (1994). In the film Jim Carrey finds a mask that changes his life completely. Write down three things that happen to Stanley Ipkiss (Jim Carrey) in the scene that show he is changed in personality.

    

3. Go to imdb.com or allmovie.com and read the summary of the film �The Mask�. Write down what the film is about and who is tricked in the film. Explain this in approximately 50-100 words. 

 

4. Think of 2 film titles in which a character is tricked himself or tricks someone else. State both the film title and the year in which this film was released. 

    

5. Who is the character in the picture at the bottom of the page? Use the internet for this.  State his / her name.  

 

 6. Find out what the opposite of a trickster is and give one example from a TV show or cartoon.

 

7. Use the internet to find out what kind of characteristics a trickster has and list 3 or 4 characteristics in your fact sheet.  

 

8. Surf to www.youtube.com and find a video in which another person is being tricked. Make sure you add the link and the title of the video in your fact sheet. 

 

9. Come up with 3 possible synonyms for the word �trickster�.

 

10. Some would say that the character played by Heath Ledger in �The Dark Knight� (2008) is a trickster as well. State the name of this character and explain in approximately 50-100 words why this person plays a trick and who he tricks. 

 

11. Sometimes characters in books or films have a name that is an anagram and have a hidden meaning (e.g. Tom Marvolo Riddle = I am Lord Voldemort). Pick a trickster from any book, film or TV show and make an anagram of his / her name (with a hidden meaning if possible).

 

 

These were the questions of the introductory assignment. Use this fact sheet as the start of your portfolio. Your fact sheet needs to be ready before you can move on to the next assignment, so make sure your teacher checks off the assignment.
