Overfishing and the Seafood Dilemma

Introduction

seafooddiet.jpg

You know the old joke, “I’m on a seafood diet.”  “Really?” asks a friend. “Ya, I see food and I eat it.” Ha, Ha, all joking aside, is the seafood you are eating healthy?  Will your favorite seafood be on menus in the near future?  MarineBio.org says on its web page" Fish currently supply the greatest percentage of the world's protein consumed by humans. This fact may soon change, however, given that most of the world's major fisheries are being fished at levels above their maximum sustainable yield and many regions are severely overfished. More than 70% of the world's fisheries are overexploited, which threatens the health, economy, and livelihoods of communities all over the world. The global fishing fleet is estimated to be 250% larger than needed to catch what the ocean can sustainably produce." These are some sobering statistics, but are real and worth a closer look.  Let’s investigate some of the main issues attached to overfishing and seafood consumption through role playing. Seafood animals, fishermen, environmentalists, and consumers play a part of this complex issue and thier viewpoints will need to be defended by you as  you learn about seafood consumption and overfishing.  Then we can perhaps better understand this problem and find out what we can do to help.
