Kindergarten Geography: Mapping Skills

This webquest has been designed for teachers to read along with their students as they complete it together.  Key vocabulary words are highlighted in italics.  Please find the following information useful.

Strand 4: Geography


Concept 1: The World in Spatial Terms


The spatial perspective and associated geographical tools are used to organize and interpret information about people, places, and environments.


PO 1: Recognize the difference between maps and globes.


PO 2: Construct maps of a familiar place (e.g., classroom, bedroom, playground, neighborhood).


PO 3: Determine the relative location of objects using the terms near/far, behind/in front, over/under, left/right, up/down.


Materials needed:


Day 1 : laptops, stuffed animals, blank template maps of classroom, pencils or crayons.


Day 2: laptops,


Day 3: laptops, scissors, glue, construction paper, worksheets found on Day 3's "teacher resource."


Day 4: laptops, blow up globes.


Day 5: laptops, stuffed animals, blank template maps of school, pencils, scissors.


Feel free to adapt to your individual classroom needs, or make suggestions for me to improve this webquest.  Unfortunately, i cannot seem to insert pics to enhance the appearance.  I tried to make it interdisciplinary with a variety of activities to reinforce content instruction with multiple modes of learning.  I am always open to suggestions and hope that teachers find these tools helpful and effective as they are used in classrooms.
