Fellow Teachers,

First of all, I understand that this Webquest probably does not follow the super strict guidelines of what a true Webquest is supposed to be - though I could not find anything on the internet that was specifically related to Algebra and this unit on Linear Equations.

Second, for those teachers who think this Webquest is really just a "scavenger hunt" I apologize in advance.  I welcome any ideas on how to make the jump from just acquiring knowledge to integrating the activity into a more Real World situation - and something that goes beyond the famous Cell Phone problem (which my students have already seen).  This unit arose out of the need for a transition between the elementary level of understanding for the Coordinate Plane and the more abstract concepts of Linear Equations and representing lines in Slope-Intercept Form.

Third, I have taught Linear Equations a number of different ways and am not convinced that one method works better than another - though usually I start by explaining the slope since it often proves to be one of the most difficult areas in algebra.  Next, I re-introduce intercepts (from plotting points) before teaching the Slope-Intercept Form.  While I always teach Standard Form of a Line, I think that the prior form is far more useful and important.

I plan on giving my students about two weeks to finish this unit, though they will not be working solely on this project during that time.  Currently I teach in a one-to-one laptop setting so my students will have individual access to computers on a daily basis. Even though I have seen computer activities that remove the social and collaborative aspect of a regular classroom, I feel as if I can supplement my class time with additional activities that will encourage student interaction.

If you'd like to see a website that covers a lot of the info in this Webquest, go here:

If you are interested in the seeing the NCTM Standards for this Unit - which I have taken very lightly (especially since this unit is probably more for grades 7-9), go here:

If you do not have a Mac, this project is still possible using Winplot.  You can find the free download below (it's a confusing website, but the program is actually pretty sweet and easy to use once you figure out how to download it!)

Thanks for your comments and suggestions.

Sincerely,
Thomas Whipple
