W2A: Compose text showing awareness of audience choosing a form and point of view appropriate to purpose and audience

IL2A: Analyze, describe and evaluate the elements of messages projected in various media (e.g., videos, pictures, websites, artwork, plays, and/or news programs)

ENDURING UNDERSTANDING(S)
In order to meet the standards, students will need to understand the effects of the Harlem Renaissance on literature and culture.

LESSON OBJECTIVE(S)
Students will be able to reflect on the writings of a time period and analyze their effects on the life of a person in that time.
CRITERIA FOR SUCCESS
Formative Assessment:
Students will maintain a folder with their notes, documents, and references.
Summative Assessment:
Students submit the memoir project which contains their writing, 2 pieces of literature they have found, and a picture they have located.

Computers with internet access
MANAGEMENT
This lesson will take about 1 to 2 weeks to complete. The lesson contains independent work, group work, and class presentation. Students will be seated in groups.
LEARNER DIVERSITY
Students will be placed in groups containing 1 below level student, 1 above level student, and 2 average students. By doing this, students can help each other along.
SIGNIFICANT TASKS

REMEDIATION
Additional computer time can be provided for those students who do not have access to computers outside of the class. Peers will be encouraged to assist each other in understanding and progressing through the assignment.
EXTENSIONS
Students who complete the basics of the assignment quickly will be encouraged to include an additional author of their choice to share with the class during presentations. They can also be encouraged to find examples of art and music of the Harlem Renaissance to be viewed or listened to by the class while working on the project. You can also direct students to the hotlist page for additional research.
