Topic:  Harlem Renaissance

Subject/Course: American Literature/Lit & Comp/Creative Writing

Grade: 10th - 12th

 

SHOW-ME STANDARDS

Content Standards:

CA 4: writing formally (such as reports, narrative, essays) and informally (such as outlines, notes)

Performance Standards:

Goal 1.5: comprehend and evaluate written, visual and oral presentations and works

Goal 2.4: present perceptions and ideas regarding works of the arts, humanities and sciences

 

GRADE-LEVEL EXPECTATIONS

W2A: Compose text showing awareness of audience choosing a form and point of view appropriate to purpose and audience

W2E: In written text apply conventions of capitalization, conventions of punctuation, standard usage

IL2A: Analyze, describe and evaluate the elements of messages projected in various media (e.g., videos, pictures, websites, artwork, plays, and/or news programs)

 

ISTE FOUNDATION STANDARDS:

1: Basic operations and concepts - students demonstrate a sound understand of the nature and operation of technology systems

ENDURING UNDERSTANDING(S)

In order to meet the standards, students will need to understand the effects of the Harlem Renaissance on literature and culture.

  • What do you want your grand-children to know about the Harlem Renaissance? 
  • How did the literature of the era affect your thinking and the thinking of others? 
  • How can you convey the importance of this movement to your grand-children?

 

LESSON OBJECTIVE(S)

Students will be able to reflect on the writings of a time period and analyze their effects on the life of a person in that time.

 

CRITERIA FOR SUCCESS

Formative Assessment:

Students will maintain a folder with their notes, documents, and references.

Summative Assessment:

Students submit the memoir project which contains their writing, 2 pieces of literature they have found, and a picture they have located.

MANAGEMENT

This lesson will take about 1 to 2 weeks to complete.  The lesson contains independent work, group work, and class presentation.  Students will be seated in groups.

 

LEARNER DIVERSITY

Students will be placed in groups containing 1 below level student, 1 above level student, and 2 average students.  By doing this, students can help each other along.

REMEDIATION

Additional computer time can be provided for those students who do not have access to computers outside of the class.  Peers will be encouraged to assist each other in understanding and progressing through the assignment.

 

EXTENSIONS

Students who complete the basics of the assignment quickly will be encouraged to include an additional author of their choice to share with the class during presentations.  They can also be encouraged to find examples of art and music of the Harlem Renaissance to be viewed or listened to by the class while working on the project.  You can also direct students to the hotlist page for additional research.

 

REFLECTION/SELF-REFLECTION

  1. To what extent were the students productively engaged in the work?  How do I know?
  2. What feedback did I receive from students indicating they achieved understanding and that the objectives were met for this lesson?
  3. What specific elements of the tasks did the students have the most difficulty with?  What could be done to enhance student learning for these specific skills?
  4. If I had the opportunity to teach the lesson again to the same group of students, what would I change?
