A comparison essay


A Comparison or Contrast essay is an essay in which you either compare something or contrast something. 


In this case we are going to focus on the comparison essay that is an essay in which you emphasize the similarities.


An example of where can we use the comparison method or it can be used the contrast method as well, it will be when we want to choose or when we have the  thinking when deciding which university to attend, which car to buy, or whether to drive a car or take a bus or an airplane to a vacation site, trying to show or to find the similarities and then to choose the best option for the thinking we are searching on the specific topic.


There are to ways to write a comparison essay



  • Block arrangement

  • Point-by-point

 And now we have 2 examples about the two different kinds of comparison essays: We are doing a comparison between where would be the best option of vacationing in the mountains or at the beach.


 Block Arrangement (four paragraphs)


 I. Introduction in which you state your purpose which is to discuss the differences between vacationing in the mountains or at the beach.

III. Second difference between mountains and beaches are types of activities

IV. Third difference between mountains and beaches is the location

There are some of the strategies that you can use in order to reach a very good writing:


        Keeping a vocabulary log


        Relating the new word to a word family


        Identifying new sentence patterns


Some of the characteristics that a Good Writer should have:


        Read (styles and genres)


        Write as much as you can


        Take a writing course


        Know the elements of style


        Build your vocabulary


        Become a better researcher


        Write for an audience


        Get workshop feedback


        Learn how to edit your own work


        Don�t rely on spell check � proofread


Some of the characteristics that a Bad Writer should have:


        Expect to be easy


        Don�t master the fundaments


        Always say more than they think


        They don�t research for the best word


        Don�t order their words


        Don�t attend to details


        Don�t fake it


        Know when to quite


        Don�t learn on editors


        Dare to be bad (have contradictory ideas)
