Mission:   Your job is to research information to make an interesting and informative PowerPoint presentation to share with your class. In addition there will be also be a written report.

Requirements for the PowerPoint- and the Written Report:

  • No less than 12 slides
  • Title page
  • References Page
  • Element name
  • Element symbol
  • Atomic number
  • Atomic Mass
  • Number of isotopes
  • Number of radioactive isotopes
  • List all radioactive isotopes (these are all the ones that don't say STABLE next to them)
  • Number of valence electrons (same as the group #) unless over 8 then subtract 10 from group # to get the total # of valence electrons
  • Year of discovery
  • Name of discoverer
  • General appearance- What does it look like?
  • Uses of element- What is it used for? Historical and current uses
  • Is it a Metal, Nonmetal, or Metalloid?
  • Melting/Freezing point? oC
  • Boiling/Vaporization point? oC?
  • 5 interesting facts about your element
  • Minimum of  5 graphics (pictures)
  • In addition to the 5 graphics: Please include a Bohr model of your atom*Bohr model is optional
  • For solids only Hardness on the Mohs Scale (that's the 1-10 scale)
  • Is it a solid, liquid, or gas at room temperature? 20o

Requirements for the written report:

  • Must contain all of the information required for the PowerPoint and everything listed in this section.
  • 5 interesting fact- go into more depth or provide more than the required five
  • For solids only Hardness on the Mohs Scale
  • Is it a solid, liquid, or gas at room temperature? 20o
  • Who discovered it? When? How?
  • Provide as much information as possible.
  •  Uses- What were the historical uses? What are the modern (current) uses? Provide as much information as possible.
  •  Explain how the group number determines the number of valence electrons.
  • Also, explain how the number of valence electrons determines the chemical properties of your atom.  Please explain in detail the chemical properties of your atom based on its number of valence electrons
  •

Remember! Your report must be at least 3 pages.

  •      One title page
  •      One full page of text-
  •      -You may include pictures but they will not count towards the 1 full page of text
  •      -12 point Times New Roman Font
  •      One reference page- include all references used in report and PowerPoint
  • ***The information collected should help you be able to answer the following essential question: How do properties and structures of materials determine their uses?

Description: Here is a sample of a Research Paper. The entire paper must be in size 12 Times New Roman Font with no more than a 1 border for top, bottom, left, and right sides. The title page must include the following: Title, name, date, and class period. The next page is the one full page of text. You may double space. If you would like to add pictures you must insert them AFTER you write one full page of information/text to ensure that your paper is long enough. The last page is the references page. You must list all references that were used in the written report AND PowerPoint here. They must be in alphabetical order.
