The Earth, Moon, and Sun...Seasons, Phases, and More

Process

You will work in pairs of scientists as assigned by the lead scientist (yes, that is your teacher!).

Each pair of scientists will jointly research and record data in the Scientific Data Collection Journal you received from the lead scientist. At the end of each research period (daily), you and your partner will turn in your Scientific Data Collection Journal to the lead scientist (teacher). She will review and initial your journal prior to the next research period to make sure you are working on the right track.

You may utilize all of the given websites, but you will also be allowed to collect data from other sources you may find on-line, in the library, or from books you already own.

After you have completed the research process you will then synthesize the data into a presentation format.  You and your research partner may choose the format you use. Suggestions for this include a poster(s), a PowerPoint presentation, a booklet, or some other interesting format....be creative!

You will have two weeks to work on this project during our science block, however, you may do additional research when time permits before the school day begins, during free center time, or at home. The specific topics you will be researching and possible research sites will be provided below.

Once you have completed your research and presentation project, you and your partner will present to the other scientists in our class one of your areas of research....but be thorough on each area because you will not be told which topic area you are presenting until the end of the two week research time.

Keep in mind that once we have completed the entire unit, we will be working as a class to build a model that will help our new, young scientists get a firm understanding of the Earth-Moon-Sun system.  You will need to refer to your Data Collection Journals to assist with the construction of these models.

Finally, I highly recommend that you and your partner read through the rubric for this assignment, located in the "Evaluation" section, so that you understand what is expected in order to receive a high rating on your work!

Specific Areas of Research
Record what you learn from these websites in your Data Collection Journal.

(1)  Explain the rotation and revolution of the Earth and the Moon.

(2)  Explain what causes Earth to have different seasons.

(3)  Explain and name the various phases of the Moon.
