Journal Entry from Plymouth

Process

DAY ONE:  With your partner, begin by watching the Mayflower Video from History.com found below.  Once you have watched the video, visit Caleb Johnson's Website and read through the passenger list and all of the information found in the "The Mayflower", "The Voyage", and "The Pilgrims" sections of "Pilgrim History."  Make sure you read the information carefully!  When you are done, you will chose a passenger from the list and write a one page journal entry describing what the voyage on the Mayflower was like from their perspective.  Put your journal entry in your writing folder when you are finished.

DAY TWO:  With you partner, think about the following scenario:

Imagine this: you have been crammed onto a 90 foot sailing ship with 127 other people for more than two months66 days to be exact. This isnt any cruise ship, either. There are no bathrooms (people just wash up on deck and throw waste overboard); food is scarce and mostly stale; and since this is the open, churning Atlantic ocean, people are seasick all over the place. Finally, finally, you have reached landbut with no sign of civilization as you know it.

In other words, youre standing in the shoes of our Pilgrim ancestors.

On November 11, 1620, faced with these realities, they made a historic decision: they created the Mayflower Compact, our earliest Constitution. Their words later inspired our Founding Fathers. But heres our challenge: what about you? Is this a document that you could sign, too?

Open "The Mayflower Compact" webpage below and read through the document and signatures.  Then download and print the "Would You Sign the Mayflower Compact Worksheet."  Work with your partner to discuss and answer each question.  When you are finished, turn in your question sheet.

DAY THREE:  With your partner, revisit Caleb Johnson's website and read through the "Life in Plymouth" section of "Pilgrim History."  Once you have read all of the information in this section, take out a piece of white lined paper and number from one to ten.  You will then watch the How Stuff Works video on Life in Plymouth and take the ten question T/F quiz at the end.  Turn in your quiz when you are finished.  After you have turned in your quiz, work with your partner to write a one page journal entry from the perspective of the passenger you chose on day one.  When you are finished, put your journal entry in your writing folder.

DAY FOUR:   With your partner, watch the History video on the History of Thanksgiving.  After you've watched the video, visit and read through the web page on Pilgrims, Squanto, and Thanksgiving.  After you have read all of the information, write a journal entry about the first Thanksgiving from the perspective of your passenger.

DAY FIVE:  Read through all three of your journal entries.  Edit and update them to ensure that they are accurate and believable.  You may look back at any of the websites or videos you want to in order to complete the best product possible.  Anyone reading your entries should believe you were there!  Visit the Evaluation portion of this webquest and use the rubric to assess your work to make sure it is the best it can be.  I will be using that rubric to grade your journal entries.
