The Age of Discovery:
Process
Step One: Knowing your Explorer
- You will be divided in to 6 "Explorer" groups.
- As a group, you will research the explorer you have been randomly chosen for.
- Research the life of your explorer and each member should complete an "Explorer
Information Sheet".
- Research the government sponsoring the expedition, the geographical area(s) the explorer set sail to and the local natives of the area.
Step Two: Captain's Log- You will need to create a log book. Use two sheets of paper, fold them in a hamburger fold. Title the front page "Captain's Log", include a sub title with your explorers name and a picture. Log entries should be a minimum of two complete paragraphs (10 complete sentences), handwritten and include a date. The back page should include your name, date and period number.
Log entry #1
You will write the first log entry by explaining the following
- Who you are
- What country you are living in
- Hardships you experience trying to get a country to finance your expedition
Log entry #2
For the second log entry, you have recieved financial support and its time to plan your expedition. Describe your thoughts as you:
- Search for a ship(s) for the journey
- Hire the crew for this risky endeavor
- Plan for supplies for a long journey
- Depart on your voyage
Log entry #3
You have been at sea for several weeks with no land in sight. Your third log entry will
describe the following:
- What issues arise aboard ship
- How the moral of the ship changed
- What is going through your mind after a long time at sea
- When land has been seen
Log entry #4
You have finally reached land and have decided to explore. In this log entry you will describe the following:
- Feelings as you step on to the newly discovered land
- The geography of this new land
- The sights and sounds of the new area
- Natives you come into contact with
Log entry #5
After months of exploring you have returned home. For the final log entry describe the following:
- Feelings of you and your crew as you arrive home to their families
- Your meeting with the King and Queen that sponsored your voyage
Step Three: Compare and Contrast
Students will work with their shoulder partner (groups of two or three) to create a presentation comparing and contrasting the voyages , discoveries timelines and contributions of thier explorer to the age of Discovery. Students may use any of the following programs to present their information
- MS Word
- MS PowerPoint
- Active Inspire
- Inspiration
- Any program found on the Emints laptops
Step Four: Presentation
Students will then present their information to the class
