Geologic State of Emergency

Process

First, I will move everyone up into groups of five students.  We must work quickly.  The world leaders need the information very soon.  In order to create a eight minute PowerPoint presentation the work load must be split up.  Assigning roles to each individual in the group will allow this process to go faster.  The five different roles will include:  1) Background geologist, 2) Site geologist, 3) Oral presenter, 4) PowerPoint creator, 5) Group leader and utility person.

**In order to obtain the information needed, each group member will have their own job description.  The grade will be given on the finished product and not individual work.  A reflection will be written after the project is complete.  If there is evidence of someone not working hard enough individual points will be deducted.  Below, each job description is described.  At the very bottom of this page are the links I suggest you use.  At least two of these links must be used for your presentation.

1) Background geologist:  You must give the group the information on the background of your specific topic.  The following questions must be answered.  How is it formed? Where is it formed (plate boundary)?  What are the different types?  What is the driving force behind it?  What is its significance to the human race?  Any other pertinent information is also viable.  You must site your sources so a reference page can be created.  Your information should be enough for two slides.  If there are questions please feel free to ask the teacher.  Collaborate with your group members and use the links below.  You must use at least one of these links for your information.  To receive all points, the questions above must be answered.

2) Site geologist:  You must give the group the information on two regions where this occurs on our planet. When doing this, you must obtain the following information.  What country/city is this located?  How does it work?  What is being done to protect human lives?  When were the last occurrences of tectonic activity in this area (or what is happening now)?  How old is it?  Be creative and find interesting information.  You must site your sources so a reference page can be created.  Your information should be enough for two slides.  If there are questions please feel free to ask the teacher.  Collaborate with your group members and use the links below.  You must use at least one of these links for your information. To receive all points, these questions must be answered.

3) Oral presenter:  You must give the oral presentation for your specific group.  An important part of presenting is understanding the information.  In order to do so, you must work closely with the background and site geologists.  Feel free to help them search for their information.  As a presenter remember that you only have five minutes.  Be short when discussing and explaining the topic, but please be concise.  The presentation is important to helping the "World Leaders Panel" (your teacher and fellow classmates) understand your topic.

4) PowerPoint creator:  You must take all of the information obtained from your team.  There must be seven slides in the presentation.  Firstly, there has to be a title page including the name of your topic and your team member's names.  Also, include a picture on the first page.  Secondly, then next two slides must include an introductory background on your topic.  Get this from the background geologist.  Thirdly, the next two slides must include the information obtained by the site geologist.  The sixth slide will include ideas for creating safety within the community of your two site locations.  You will get this from your group leader.  The last page must be a conclusion/ reference page.  Use appropriate contrast and font size.  Include only five pictures in the PowerPoint presentation.  Be creative!

5) Group leader/utility:  You must manage the group.  However, you must help the group obtain information and review it before putting in the slide show.  It is your job to get information for the sixth slide about how geologists/engineers have found ways to protect people.  Before doing this, clearly describe the hazard.  Include your own ideas for helping save lives, protecting buildings, etc.  Be creative and help bring all your information together for the PowerPoint.  Use at least one of the links below for your information.  You must also contribute to the reference page.

Follow the rubric to complete the tasks.  The questions above as well as the procedures must be completed to get full credit.  You will be presenting to teach, not just for your own understanding.
