Minerals and Rocks

Step 2

You are to do this part with a partner.

Print out the Rock Observation Data Table.  See the link at the bottom of the page.

Observe, test, and record your observations of the rocks in our class collection.

For each rock...

  1. Use a hand lens to look at the rock.  Draw what you see.  Note its color, texture, luster, and other details.   Record your observations in the data table.
  2. Use the balance to measure the mass and record the information in the data table.
  3. Place the rock in a cup of water.  Does it sink or float?  Record this information.
  4. Use a nail to try to scratch the rock.  Can you scratch it?  Record your observations.
  5. Use a streak plate.  Scrape the rock across the streak plate.  Record the color of the streak.
  6. Match the number on the rock to the name of the rock.  Record this information.
