Task 9: Teaching Reading and Writing

Very often, when we listen to our EFAL/ESL learners speak we are very impressed by their ability to communicate in English. However, when they have to explain reading passages or communicate in writing, we wonder if they are the same learners. This is because there is no correlation between these learners� BICS and CALP. Developing learners� ability to navigate the written text is critical for successful academic performance. Take time to ensure that your learners understand the conventions of writing and you will safely move them closer to increased academic achievement.
