Fasting blood glucose (FBS) or Fasting Glucose Tolerance Testing: is a test performed to determine a person’s blood sugar without the influence of a meal. It is a more accurate test of blood glucose than a random test because it is performed after at least 8 hours of fasting, without a meal or drink other than water. FBS can be determined by a finger stick quick test, or by blood draw from a vein. Preparation is simply abstaining from food or beverages other than water for at least 8 hours prior to testing.

Normal levels of a fasting blood glucose are between 70-100 mg/dl

   Pre-diabetes is considered to be 100-124 mg/dl

2 consecutive tests of 125 or greater can assign a positive diagnosis of diabetes.
