A Five Day Unit for Social Studies

AMERICAN HISTORY Have you ever thought about the road that has been paved before you? You may think it had no impact on your life today, since it is just Histroy now. Well, think again!

For this activity you will be able to research a 10 year period of American History to gain some insight of how those roads were paved and why. You will look at Presidents, events, and even wars that took place at those specific times in History. You will even be given the chance to work in groups and act out an event.

WORLD HISTORY So what does other places in the World have to do with you? Have you ever asked yourself that question? I know I have. Even decisions made in other places has had an impact on America to this day.

The Greeks and Romans lived a ling time ago, but they had an impact on the world that still makes a difference. Today you will be able to research the lifestyles of the Greeks and Romans and then compare and contrast their lives with yours today. I bet you will be surprised how similar they might be.

GOVERNMENT As students do you ever wonder if you can make a difference in government? Well you can! Even though you can not legally vote, you can set up a classroom structure and vote for your classmates. In this activity you will be able to work with your classmates as politicians. You will learn about who can run for office, and how an election runs right in your classroom! Have fun seeing who will win the election!

GEOGRAPHY Many different forms of natural disasters take place in the world these days. Each time one of these disasters happens, it takes a toll on society. Not only does the natural disaster effect the local area, but it effects the world depending on the size of the disaster.
 
In this activity you will be able to work in teams to help design a plan for preparing for a disaster and also what to do during and after the disaster. Teamwork here will be key.

ECONOMICS Ever wish you had more money to buy the things you wanted? Well there is a way to get what you want, but there is a very important consequence to getting what you want when you do not have the means to get it. The consequence is called interest. Many people make many on lending money to others by making interest and those who pay interest may go broke simply by paying the interest.

This activity will show you how people make money off of interest and the side effect that interest plays on the buyer. You will be able to either be a banker, lender, or buyer in this activity to see how interest makes a big impact in society.
