A Journey into Pompeii

Because time is short, on your journey, we are going to provide you with specific instructional tips and links that will take you right where you need to be!

 

We need 3 groups with 6 people each in the group.

 

Group 1:

Remember, your goal is to find out as much as you can about the eruption.

 

  • Three people need to look up the type of eruption and provide details about how it occurs.

  • Three people need to look up a time line as to how quickly the eruption took place, and what happened in Pompeii during this time.

As a Group, You all need to:

  1. 1. Each draw a diagram of the steps necessary for the type of eruption that happened over Pompeii.
  2. 2. Each draw a timeline of the actual eruption of Vesuvius as it happened on August 24 79 A.D.
  3. 3. Each write a paragraph as if you were there, what you saw, and why it was so devastating. Provide as many details about the volcano as possible!



Group 2: Remember, your goal is to find out if any other cities were affected by the same eruption in addition to Pompeii.

 

  • Three people need to find a map and locate any cities to the north and/or west of Vesuvius that might have been affected.

 

  • Three people need to find a map and locate any cities to the south and/or east of Vesuvius that might have been affected.

As a Group, You all need to:

 

  1. 1. Each draw a map of Vesuvius and the cities that surround it.
  2. 2. Each write one paragraph about the cities you found, how these cities handled the eruption, and any famous people that might have come from these cities.
  3. 3. Each write a creative paragraph as if you were in a city of your choice besides Pompeii and how the eruption looked to you.


Group 3: Remember, your goal is to find artifacts that were left behind in Pompeii. These artifacts tell us a lot about how these people lived and what was important to them.

 

  • Each person in the group needs to find 3 different artifacts. As a group you should find 18 artifacts. This can include food, pets, jewelry, houseware, furniture, etc.

As a Group, You all need to:

 

  1. 1. Each find 3 artifacts, and describe each one with a paragraph. There should be 3 paragraphs that tell about these artifacts and how they were used.
  2. 2. Each provide a picture or drawing for each of your artifacts.
  3. 3. Each write a creative story about a person in Pompeii that used your three artifacts.
