Pythagorean Theorem
Process
You will need the following materials before beginning this webquest:
- pencil, paper, ruler, eraser
- calculator
- protractor
- scissors
- straws
- pipe cleaners
- cm grid paper
- glue stick
- coloured pencils
- your username and password to log into your school account
This activity requires you to access the internet and participate in an interactive proof of the Pythagorean Theorem.
- Log into NCTM Illuminations Activity found in Resource 1.
- Expand the Instructions (click on the + sign) and read what you will have to do.
- Expand the Exploration (click on the + sign) and follow the instructions.
ACTIVITY 2
This activity requires you to use Cut & Paste methods to prove the Pythagorean Theorem.
- Open the PDF file found in Resoure 2. Download and then print the document.
- Follow the instructions listed for each Investigation.
- Log into NOVA ONLINE The Proof - Pythagorean Puzzle found in Resource 3.
- Click on Pythagoras to find out more about this famous mathematician. Take notes as you will be required later to write a brief report about Pythagoras.
- Select the Shockwave version to review how the Theorem works.
- Follow the instructions that are given.
- Once you have finished with the interactive activity go back to the previous page by clicking on the back arrow in your toolbar.
- Now select the non-Shockwave version.
- Follow the directions given.
- Once you have finished scroll down to the last line "Congratulations! You've shown that the Pythagorean theorem works! But how can you use it?" Select the use it?. In the new screen select baseball: throwing the runner out.
- Solve this puzzle on a separate sheet of paper. Be sure to draw a diagram and show all your calculations. When you are finished you can check your answer by selecting I'm ready to check my answer.
- Go back to the previous page by clicking on the back arrow in your toolbar. Select ladders: breaking and entering.
- Solve this puzzle on the same sheet of paper as the previous one. Again, be sure to draw a diagram and show all your calculations. When you are finished you can check you answer by selecting I'm ready to check my answer.
- Watch the YouTube video - How to prove Pythagoras' Theorem found in Resource 4.
- When you are finished, write a brief report about this video describing its effectiveness. Did this video do a good job of explaining and then proving Pythagoras' Theorem?
- Watch the YouTube video - The Life of Pythagoras found in Resource 5. Take notes as you watch this video.
- Write a 200 to 250 word report about Pythagoras. You may use other resources that you find on the internet. Be sure to include a list of these other resources with your report and include a title page.
