Introduction: In this webquest, students need to make a plan for a traditional Korean birthday party for a year old baby. To have done this task successfully, students will have to search, sort and synthesize information they have found. The task in this webquest involves group cooperation and task based learning.
Learners: This webquest is actually designed for the Korean learners of English and promote their English learning by addressing their own cultural issues. However, it can be used for any other English learners to raise the awareness of cultural diversity. This activity requires the pre intermediate or intermediate level of English to understand written texts on the web and present their ideas properly. Also, they need to have the basic skills to search the Internet and editing skills in a word processor.
Standards: Gathering, sorting, and synthesizing the needed information in the written text. Communication skills to present ideas and comprehend peer talk. Basic IT skills to search the Internet and document editing skills in a word processor
Process: This activity is likely to take two 45 minute lessons. In the first lesson, students are divided into a group of 5 people, set their roles, do some research, collect all the information they have found, and start to write a report for the party plan. In the second lesson, students are present their findings and assess themselves and the other groups. Students are encouraged to explore other websites for more information with the given website addresses. Most of the contents that student have found are almost the same, but ask students to add their own creativity based on the knowledge of the Tol.
Resources: At least one computer per group of 2-3 students, with an Internet connection and a Web browser and a world processor.
Evaluation: The self and peer assessment done by students are the materials of evaluation of this activity.
Conclusion:
This webquest gives another way of learning English: Learning English by knowing Korean traditions and teaching them to others. The ability to deliver their tradition will help them practice their English and open the door to understand other cultures.
