This webquest is designed upon an idea I gleaned from a webquest by Brooks Widmaier - Thank you.
The webquest is aimed at Year 3/4 level and was used for my class in 2012. It is the first I have attempted and I am keen to try more. It could easily be adapted for older students by adding more complex resources and by giving them additional activities eg a biography of the explorer.
To complete this webquest I suggest groups of about 3 or 4 students and that they work together to complete the initial information and then they work individually to achieve the map and passport.
There needs to be a trunk per group which contains items specific to each explorer and which can lead the children to finding out about the individual explorers. It is best if these items relate to the information you provide in your links. EG an explorer known for his love of fancy clothes might have a gold button in the collection or a fancy hankie.
My Trunks contained only 4 items, most of which I made or created from printed maps made to look old. Cortes - a map of Mexico
- A piece of gold
- a photo of a man, wife, son, 3 daughters
- ??
Polo - Map of China
