Explanation: The independent study is
broken down into three parts. Part 1 is
a written log of what you read and your reaction to the text. Part 2 is an investigative project that
teaches high-quality research skills.
Part 3 is a combination of creative activities that encourage students
to think about characters, key events, themes, symbols, and the novel as a
whole.
Parts 1 and 3 are completed
independently. Part 2 will be completed
in groups of two or three. Therefore, if
you are in a group of 4+, you’ll have to choose a partner/triad for this
portion.
Each available class day
will be spent completing the independent study.
You will determine a plan for how to get all the tasks
accomplished. The only requirement is
that you spend at least ten minutes at the beginning of each class as a whole
group discussing what you’ve read so far.
This discussion should include: plot summary/clarification, things you
find interesting, things you find confusing, specific passages that stood out
to you, questions, and anything else related to the text. It’s like having a mini literacy circle each
day.
At the conclusion of the
independent study, you will complete a peer evaluation for each of your group
members based on (1) how evenly the work was delegated and (2) if everyone put
forth equal participation and effort.
