Part A. Getting to know the author
Have you ever read a novel written by someone your age?  Using the websites below, read about someone who wrote a book we will be reading in class.
Read the information about S.E. Hinton starting with the Biography.

  1. How old was she when she wrote The Outsiders?
  2. What influenced her to write The Outsiders?
  3. What year was The Outsiders published?
  4. Where did Hinton get the idea for The Outsiders?
  5. When was the movie of The Outsiders released?

What do YOU think? If the movie were released this year, how might if differ from the original movie? Name at least 2 examples.


Part B. Subculture --> Greaser

Dictionary.com gives this definition:

youth subculture  -noun
a minority youth culture whose distinctiveness depended largely on the social class and ethnic background of its members; often characterized by its adoption of a particular music genre

Some groups are considered to be gangs - others, not so much. These groups are often identified by their clothing , hairstyle, speech, etc. Using links below, read about some youth subcultures. In The Outsiders, there are 2 such groups: the Greasers and the Socs. Read more about greasers and then answer the following questions.

  1. Write down 5 things you have learned about the Greasers subculture in America.
  2. What are some reasons why a teenager might join a gang in the 60's?

PART C: What did that look like?
  1. Use the Google or Yahoo images to find a picture of a madras shirt. Paste the picture in your word document
  2. Read about how to create a 50's/60's male pompadour. Who are some famous men who wore this hairstyle? Search Google images for a picture of one of these men and paste the picture in your word document. 
  3. Use the following links to find pictures of a Corvair and a Corvette. Paste and label each picture. 
  4. Use Google Search Engine to search for a picture of a 'young' Paul Newman. Paste the picture in your word document and write a brief (1 sentence) description of who he was and what he did.


PART D: Living in the 60s
  1. List 5 bands that were popular during the early to mid 1960�s.
  2. List 5 popular T.V. shows from the 1960�s.
  3. Write the names of two presidents in the 1960�s.
  4. Find the prices of 6 commonly used items in the 1960�s.
  5. List five popular toys from the 1960�s.
  6. Give the definitions and the current slang equivalent of these 60s slang words: grub, cat, hairy, fuzz, cherry.
  7. List 3 major world events from the 1960's.
